The Vincennes City Council met on Monday night and voted to postpone a proposed five-year tax abatement request for SCHOTT North America.
The company is seeking the abatement as part of a $1.8 million investment in new manufacturing equipment to expand its production capacity. The request would reduce personal property taxes over five years, starting with a full deduction in the first year and decreasing each year until it ends.
Council President Brian Grove stated that the members had not had adequate time to review the proposal. He also mentioned receiving calls from constituents with questions about it. He recommended further discussion to gain a better understanding of the potential impact.
The motion to table the approval of prior abatements and the preliminary resolution passed unanimously. Council members emphasized that this delay is not a rejection of the abatement but rather a pause for closer examination. The issue will be revisited in two weeks.
Also, at the meeting, the council recapped a busy weekend in the city, spotlighting the strong turnout for the inaugural Matt Minderman Memorial Tournament hosted by the Vincennes Cub League.
Council member Richard Ashby noted the event drew 17 out-of-town teams. He said when factoring in players, parents, family members, and friends, the tournament generated significant revenue for local hotels and restaurants. He learned that over 600 full weekend bracelets had been sold, and the concession stand had sold out on both days, which is an unusual occurrence.
Council President Brian Grove also praised the tournament, adding that despite the weekend rain, games continued as planned thanks to the quality of the field and those who maintain it.
