A 10-year-old girl is recovering after a near-drowning at Raccoon State Recreation Area on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m., a family member noticed the child had gone underwater and didn’t resurface. After a brief search, he found her and brought her to shore. She was unresponsive, had no pulse, and was not breathing.
Indiana Conservation Officers, nearby for river rescue training, quickly responded to the scene. Registered nurse Ashley Pecchenino from Illinois was already performing CPR when they arrived. Within minutes, the girl regained a pulse, began breathing on her own, and became responsive.
She was airlifted to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis in stable condition.
Conservation Officers remind the public that even if someone seems alert after a near-drowning, medical attention is necessary to check for any lingering effects. Emergency responders from Belmore Fire Department and Parke County EMS assisted at the scene.
