The Vincennes City Council moved forward with a proposed tax abatement for SCHOTT North America while also taking time to recognize a variety of positive developments across the city.
Council members voted 6–0 to approve a preliminary resolution supporting a five-year tax abatement tied to a $1.8 million equipment upgrade at SCHOTT’s Chestnut Street facility. The plan would support the installation of a fourth production line, and company representatives say the expansion is expected to create 24 new jobs.
Abraham Ramsey, speaking on behalf of SCHOTT, told council members, “We’re confident that the line for the new additions for which we request the abatement will be a boon to the city of Vincennes… and is overall necessary to continue SCHOTT’s mission.”
Under the plan, SCHOTT’s personal property tax deduction would begin at 100% in the first year and phase down by 20% annually over five years. A public hearing and final approval are still pending.
In other discussion, council members highlighted community progress, praising local residents for neighborhood revitalization efforts and applauding the success of the Heaps of Jeeps fundraiser, which raised over $140,000 for first responders. Infrastructure improvements were noted, including recent road resurfacing, the Bierhaus Flats groundbreaking, and progress on the upcoming Five Below site.
Council members also pointed to strong public turnout at city parks and events like Summer on Main, crediting organizers for pulling off a well-attended festival despite high temperatures.
