The annual Cops Cycling for Survivors event will pass through Vincennes this Thursday, with riders staying overnight in the city for the first time in several years. Their stop in Vincennes marks Day 11 of their 13-day, 1,000-mile journey across Indiana.
Now in its 24th year, Cops Cycling for Survivors honors fallen law enforcement officers and supports their surviving family members. Cyclists began their ride at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on July 7 and will finish in Indianapolis on July 19, traveling to all four corners of the state from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River.
At Monday’s Vincennes City Council meeting, Council Member Ed Gornall praised Vincennes University and Sodexo for providing dinner and accommodations for the cyclists on Thursday. Wendy’s will host breakfast on Friday morning. The Vincennes Police Department will assist with traffic control, and residents are encouraged to show their support along the route.
Today marks Day 10 of the ride, with cyclists traveling from Jeffersonville to Jasper. On Thursday, they will head to Vincennes and are expected to arrive at Morris Hall on the Vincennes University campus just after 4 p.m.
This year’s ride honors four officers who died in the line of duty: Hendricks County Deputy Sheriff Fred Fislar, Newton County Sheriff’s Corporal Brandon Schreiber, Indiana Department of Correction Lieutenant Donald Neiswinger Jr., and Indiana DOC Officer Shawn Burnell.
The public is invited to cheer on the riders and help remember the dedication and sacrifice of these officers.
