It’s been repeated often over the past few days, however, law enforcement cannot stress enough the importance of road safety as schools re-open to students following summer break.
North and South Knox schools are going back to school today, as are students at North Daviess. Washington Community and Catholic, Barr-Reeve, and Pike County schools return to class tomorrow. Vincennes Community and Catholic students begin the school year on Thursday.
With the return of early morning bus routes, school zones, and foot traffic around schools, drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, and eliminate distractions behind the wheel.
State police say drivers should never pass a stopped school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing. Children may be crossing the road, and ignoring the law can result in serious consequences.
In school zones, watch for crossing guards and obey posted speed limits. Be especially alert for students walking or biking to school.
Parents are encouraged to teach kids to use sidewalks, cross at designated crosswalks, and avoid talking to strangers. Children should never get into a vehicle without permission, even if they know the person.
Student drivers are reminded to wear seatbelts, keep phones put away, and avoid speeding or carrying extra passengers.
Indiana State and local Police say extra patrols will be on the roads during school hours, with zero tolerance for drivers who ignore stop arms or speed in school zones.
