Final preparations are underway for the 48th annual Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous, set for this coming Memorial Day weekend.
This year’s theme focuses on George Germain, Lord Sackville, a British leader who influenced military strategy during the American Revolution. Organizers say the goal is to start a multi-year buildup to the 250th anniversary of the American victory at Vincennes, tying each year’s theme to milestones in the Revolutionary era.
The event includes battle reenactments, historic demonstrations, period merchants, and interactive activities for families. Organizers highlight the mix of military and civilian history as what makes Vincennes’ Rendezvous unique among similar festivals.
Mark Hill, who’s been involved since the 10th Rendezvous, says his connection to the event runs deep. Growing up in the historic downtown neighborhood, he remembers hearing the fife and drum music from his porch and giving tours of local landmarks as a student.
He says reenacting in period clothing and seeing the local history come alive each year keeps him coming back. Hill adds that as he and others from the second generation of organizers grow older, they’re working to bring in younger volunteers to keep the event going strong.
Buttons for admission are on sale now, including a collectible edition that changes each year. Two-day passes are $12 for adults, $2 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for those under 5.
