FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING
Indiana is reinstating A-to-F letter grades for schools, but what happens to schools that consistently receive failing marks remains uncertain.
The State Board of Education is updating how school performance will be measured. The new accountability system will expand beyond academics to include indicators like work-based learning experiences. The full plan is expected to be released by the end of the year.
However, state officials have not yet outlined how they will handle chronically underperforming schools.
Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner says the issue will require input from state lawmakers.
“We have to look at current statute to determine if there needs to be any adjustment ahead,” Jenner said.
Indiana last issued A-to-F grades in 2018. Since then, school accountability measures have been in flux as the state transitions away from relying solely on standardized test scores.
