Tonight’s the night when teams in the Cal Ripken 10-Year-Old World Series are welcomed into town.

Vincennes is hosting a free community event—World Series Welcome on the Wabash—to officially kick off the tournament. The celebration takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. at Patrick Henry Square in downtown Vincennes and will feature food trucks, live music, a beer garden, and kids’ games.

The event is part of the city’s effort to greet the 24 teams visiting from across the United States and several international locations. Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum and City Council members are encouraging residents to attend and show local hospitality.

Yochum notes that each team has 12 players, along with family members and friends, many of whom will spend nearly two weeks in the area—driving, dining, shopping, and staying in local hotels. With hotel rooms in Vincennes at capacity, teams are also lodging in surrounding communities including Jasper, Evansville, and Olney, Illinois.

Officials estimate the tournament, which runs through August 16th at Joe Bilskie Sr. Field and Earl Lawson Field, will bring about $6 million to the local economy.
