The Vincennes City Council has unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that specifies how first floor space is used in the downtown business district.  The ordinance specifies that first floor use should be for commercial purposes.
Council members said the goal is to preserve Main Street as a business hub. Discussion included whether some properties—such as older stand-alone buildings—might require special exceptions. Officials noted that variances could be requested if needed.
Council President Brian Grove said businesses downtown support the proposal. “I’ve spoken to several of the downtown businesses and they are all in support of this. They feel like this is a step in the right direction of keeping downtown a true business district,” Grove said.
The measure won’t become final until 2nd and 3rd readings of the ordinance are read and considered at future city council meetings.
