This month marks the 245th anniversary of the battle at Fort Sackville.

The National Park Service has two programs scheduled to commemorate the battle that occured in 1779.

That’s when George Rogers Clark’s forces marched across the Illinois country and the flooded Wabash River to Vincennes to challenge Henry Hamilton and the British Army at the fort.

Clark’s success is often regarded as a key event in the American movement West.

An area 1/3 the size of the original 13 colonies known as the Old Northwest Territory became part of the United States at the end of the American Revolution.

On February 23rd at 11am The Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard will be in the GRC Memorial Rotunda for a special ceremony with music, a light lunch and a proclamation by the Mayor.

The next day, Saturday the 24th two guided walks covering the last miles of Clark’s journey take place.

There’s a five mile walk and a twelve mile walk.
