FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING
A proposal passed by an Indiana Senate committee would require schools to release students for
faith-based instruction if requested regardless of the student’s academics.
Lawmakers
removed exceptions for students who are habitually truant or struggling academically.
Students are already allowed to leave school for religious instruction. But the proposal
mandates – rather than encourages – schools to work with organizations that offer that
instruction.

Lawmakers in the House added exceptions to the bill meant to keep some students
from falling further behind by leaving school during instruction time.

After hearing testimony, lawmakers in the Senate voted to remove those exceptions.
