It’s National Police Week and today is Peace Officers Memorial Day.

It was in 1962 when  President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

Every president since then has done the same.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department encourages all to thank law enforcement officer for their service.

The week is meant to offer honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

State Police posts in Jasper and Evansville recently held memorial services for their respective districts.

In Washington today at 1-pm the local FOP Lodge 101 will hold their annual memorial ceremony at the First Baptist Church at 100 East Walnut Street in Washington.
